ABOUT DR. BREWER
Dr. Brewer started as an Emergency Doctor. After seeing too many preventable heart attacks, he went to Johns Hopkins to learn Preventive Medicine. While there, he went on the run the post-graduate training program (residency) in Preventive Medicine. From there, he made a career of practicing and managing preventive medicine and primary care clinics. His later role in this area was Chief Medical Officer for Premise, which has close to 1,000 primary care/prevention clinics. He was also the Chief Medical Officer for MDLIVE, the second largest telemedicine company. More recently, he founded PrevMed, a heart attack, and stroke prevention clinic.
At PrevMed, we focus on heart attack, stroke, and cognitive decline. We serve patients who have already experienced an event as well as those who have not developed a diagnosis or event. Dr. Brewer provides services via telemedicine or in person if you're in the Lexington, KY area. We find a lot of undiagnosed Pre-Diabetes or Insulin Resistance. Treating unrecognized risk factors like Pre-Diabetes allows reduction of risk and prevention of disease.

In August 2015, JACC (the Jl of the Am College of Cardiology) printed an editorial title Statin Intolerance: Not a Myth. Why was it title that way? I suspect one of 2 reasons, which I'll list.
This JACC article was covering a standards statement by the EAS ( European Atherosclerosis Society) re: statin intolerence. The EAS steered terminology away from the term "STATIN INTOLERANCE" and toward "SAMS (STATIN ASSOCIATED MUSCLE SYMPTOMS)". Maybe the editorialist was pushing back on that terminology suggestion by the EAS.
On the other hand, this could have been a statement re: the statistics behind statin adverse effects. SAMS is very common, affecting up to 1/3 of statins patients. On the other hand statin intolerance starts out at about 15%. 90% of those patients can actually end up safely on an effective statin treatment. That means that between 1 and 2% of patients are truly and indefinitely statin intolerant. For doctors that prescribe statins, the numbers work out something like this. About 1 in 3 patients will come back with problems. ( As a patient, I've had SAMS). But out of about 30 patients with adverse events, only 1 will not be able to take statins. So, emotionally sometimes docs may assume that there's no such thing as a true statin intolerance.
