The Martin B-26 Marauder was no stranger to controversy. The plane became the first American aircraft ordered directly off the drawing board, an unprecedented action in 1939. In the beginning, the B-26's high wing loading, necessary to provide speed and altitude, made the plane very difficult to fly. The result was an alarming accident rate and two nicknames from the pilots who knew the B-26 well: "The Widowmaker" and "One Day In Tampa Bay".
